Granite is natural, very hard and lasts a lifetime. Stone look tiles are lighter, cheaper to lay and come in more colours.

  • Floors: granite or Kota for high traffic, sandstone for courtyards, stone look tiles for bathrooms.
  • Walls: natural stone cladding for front walls, stone cladding tiles for inside feature walls.
  • Finish: polished inside, honed or leather for kitchens, flamed or rough outside.
  • Cost: thicker slabs, rare colours, and cutting for borders and steps all cost more.

  • Lay natural stone on a full mortar bed, not spots of cement, so there are no hollow sounds.
  • Keep joints 2 mm inside and 3 to 5 mm outside.
  • Seal sandstone, slate and light granite once a year in high use areas.
  • Clean with plain water and mild soap. Avoid acid cleaners on all stone.
  • Buy 10 percent spare and keep the leftover slabs for repairs.

Tile questions people ask

Which granite is best for flooring in India?

Black, grey and tan brown granites are the most popular for floors. Grey speckled granite hides dirt best, and black looks rich in bright rooms. Choose polished inside and flamed or leather finish outside.

What are Dholpuri tiles?

Dholpuri tiles are sandstone from the Dholpur area of Rajasthan, in beige or pink. They stay cool and look natural. They suit courtyards, sit-outs and porches more than heavy parking.

Is stone wall cladding good for an outside wall?

Yes. Natural stone cladding resists sun and rain and does not need painting. Fix it with exterior adhesive and clips on tall walls, and seal porous stone such as sandstone.

Granite or vitrified tiles: which is better for floors?

Granite is harder and lasts longer, and it can be re-polished. Vitrified tiles offer more designs, cost less to lay and are lighter. Pick granite for steps, parking and heavy traffic, and tiles for most rooms.

Which natural stone tiles are good for a wet area?

Slate, rough Kota and flamed granite all grip well when wet. Polished stone becomes slippery, so avoid it in bathrooms and outdoors. A matt stone look tile is also a safe option.

How do I clean granite floor tiles?

Dry mop every day and wash weekly with a bucket of water and a little mild soap. Wipe spills quickly. Avoid acid and bleach cleaners, which dull the polish over time.
